Who's Your Daddy?: The Story of Oedipus Rex, Ancient Thebes
Thebes is in crisis: a plague has descended on the city, the former king is still missing, and soothsayers are concerned. Luckily, there’s hope! The dashing new king, Oedipus, and his doting wife, Jocasta, seem on the cusp of solving the curse.
As delegates, you will represent characters taken from Sophocles’ Oedipus Cycle to save – or destroy – the city. With your backroom notes, you’ll be able to observe birds to predict the future, raise armies to fight your brother (uncle), or protest tyrants. In the front room, you will give speeches addressing themes of duty, betrayal, and complicated family dynamics.
In the end, the resolution will be determined by the fates.
Becca Fleming
Chair
Becca is a senior at Johns Hopkins University majoring in International Studies and Moral and Political Economy. She chaired last HopMUNC, and is extremely excited to get the chance again with her little and Crisis Director Dean. Becca grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but her parents recently moved to New Hampshire. She is an avid baker and is planning on making some treats for her committee. Becca also loves playing piano and bothering her friends about Formula 1. She is also a huge classics nerd and is super excited to see what chaos this committee is able to brew up. Feel free to reach out at rflemi18@jh.edu.
Dean Deseve
Crisis Director
Dean is a sophomore majoring in economics and moral and political economy. He is certain there is a difference between these majors and is willing to explain it to you if you have the time. On the weekends, you can find him at any given museum in Baltimore or D.C. He started Model UN in middle school and continued through high school when he realized that it was theater for kids who wear suits. He also volunteers at the Nuclear ship Savannah, interns at Ocean Leap Capital, and leads the finance team for the Hopkins Wind Energy Team.
